Rosco Cinegel #3062 "Silent Light Grid Cloth" – woven diffusion material for soft lighting on exterior shoots; noise-reduced for location work.

Overview

Rosco #3062 Silent Light Grid Cloth is a diffusion material from the manufacturer Rosco's Cinegel range. It is not a light source or grip equipment, but a light-shaping fabric: a reinforced, woven cloth that transforms hard light into soft, even light with reduced hard shadows. According to the manufacturer, it has optical properties similar to the classic Light Grid Cloth (#3032).

The key feature is embedded in the name: the material is "silent" – it does not flutter and flap in the wind outdoors like thinner diffusion gels. This keeps the sound on set clean and makes the cloth particularly interesting for exterior shots.

Properties

  • Material Type: reinforced, woven diffusion cloth on a heat-resistant base (not glass/not film)
  • Light Effect: even, soft diffusion; reduces hard shadows
  • Optical Similarity: similar diffusion characteristics to Light Grid Cloth #3032
  • "Silent" Feature: low noise or flutter-free in outdoor use with wind
  • Finishing: can be sewn and fitted with grommets to adapt it to frames, butterflies, or frames

The cloth is available both as a cut sheet (e.g., in size 20" x 24") and in rolls (e.g., 54" x 22' or 60" x 20').

On-Set Use

In lighting setups, #3062 is stretched as diffusion in front of light sources – for example, in frames, on butterfly/overhead frames, or directly in front of the light source. It provides a soft light quality for key light, area lighting, or softening sunlight.

Its main advantage over thin diffusion gels, which flap audibly in the wind, becomes apparent during outdoor shoots with live sound: while such gels flutter noticeably, the woven Silent material remains comparatively still. This allows it to be set up over large areas even in windy conditions without disturbing the sound – a typical application for grip and lighting crews on location shoots.
