Overview

ROE Visual is a manufacturer of professional LED display solutions, not a single device or an ANSI lamp code. The company was founded in 2006, is headquartered in Shenzhen (China), and operates its European headquarters in Leek, Netherlands. Originally specializing in LED walls for touring, live events, and broadcast, ROE Visual has become one of the defining providers for Virtual Production.

In the film and TV sector, ROE Visual panels are primarily known as building blocks for LED volumes (LED walls) – the large-format, curved LED backgrounds used for shooting in ICVFX (In-Camera Visual Effects) productions. The Black Pearl series is considered the industry standard and was used, among other productions, for the LED volume-based production of "The Mandalorian."

Product Families

• Black Pearl (BP2 / BP3) – the film-centric LED panel series for Virtual Production and xR. The BP2 variant has a finer pixel pitch than the coarser BP3.

On-Set Usage

In Virtual Production, ROE Visual panels are assembled into large-format, often curved LED volumes that serve as illuminated backgrounds and light sources simultaneously. The image displayed on the wall provides both the final in-camera background and realistic ambient light and reflections on actors and set pieces – an advantage over traditional green screen.

Important for camera compatibility are the high refresh rate (to avoid flicker and banding at short shutter times), the large bit depth for clean color and brightness gradients, and a fine pixel pitch to reduce moiré in the camera image. The panels are front-serviceable, meaning they can be maintained from the front, and can be curved concave/convex, which is relevant for enclosed volume setups.
