RGBWW: LED color-mixing architecture with five emitters—red, green, blue, plus warm white and daylight white channels for enhanced color rendering and flicker-free output.
RGBWW stands for Red, Green, Blue plus two additional White channels. It is not a specific device or manufacturer, but a designation for the emitter configuration or color mixing architecture of an LED fixture. Compared to pure RGB fixtures and RGBW (four channels), RGBWW adds a fifth channel to achieve neutral and harmonious whites, as well as more flexible color temperature control.
The background: If white is mixed solely from the three primary colors red, green, and blue, the result is often a color-tinged white with limited color reproduction. Dedicated white emitters provide a cleaner white and improve color fidelity, which is relevant for skin tones and consistent shots.
In practice, the second W is used inconsistently. There are two common interpretations:
The exact meaning depends on the specific product and should be checked in the datasheet. Related terms include RGBW (one white channel), RGBCCT (RGB plus controllable color temperature), and RGBCW (RGB plus cool and warm white).
RGBWW fixtures combine full color mixing for effect and mood lighting with high-quality, controllable white light. This makes them interesting as versatile all-rounders on set: the same fixture can provide clean working and actor light at a defined color temperature, and also produce saturated colors for backgrounds, practicals, or effects.
In professional equipment, control is typically via DMX; each emitter channel can occupy its own control address, which requires conscious channel planning for larger setups.
