Finances, organizes, and oversees film productions from development through distribution. Executive Producer manages budgets of $5 million+; Line Producer handles day-to-day operations.

Technical Details

Executive Producers oversee multiple productions with budgets starting from 5 million Euros and coordinate international co-productions. Line Producers are responsible for operational processes with budgets between 500,000-15 million Euros. Associate Producers assist with specific areas like casting or post-production, responsible for 10-25% of the total budget. Co-Producers share financing and rights equally, typically in German-French co-productions with 60/40 splits. The Producer Fee is standardly 3-7% of production costs plus 15-25% of net revenue.

History & Development

Thomas Harper Ince established the modern producer system in Hollywood in 1912 with strict budget control and schedules. Irving Thalberg at MGM perfected the division of labor between creative and operational producers from 1924 onwards. The German producer system emerged in 1967 with the Film Funding Act, which for the first time created professional production structures outside the UFA tradition. Since 1990, international co-productions have dominated: in 2023, 47% of all German feature films were made as binational productions.

Practical Application in Film

Katharina Müller-Elmau realized "System Crasher" (2019) with 1.8 million Euros through a clever combination of film funding (60%), ZDF participation (25%), and private investors (15%). For "Deutschland 83," Edward Berger coordinated three country financings as Executive Producer over 18 months of development time. Quirin Berg structured "Downfall" (2004) as a German-Austrian-Italian co-production with staggered shooting schedules for cost optimization. The preparation time for arthouse productions averages 24 months, and for genre films, 14 months.

Comparison & Alternatives

Executive Producers finance and supervise, Line Producers manage operational business. Showrunners in series productions combine producer and director functions with 12-15% budget responsibility. Editors at TV stations are thematically similar to producers but only have individual budgets of 2-4 million Euros. Streaming platforms are increasingly taking over producer functions directly: Netflix Germany has been producing 8-12 originals annually since 2019 with internal teams instead of external producers.

Perspectives

Cinematographer
