Ultra-long macro lens that physically penetrates deep into a set for extreme close-ups, prized in commercials and music videos for its distinctive compressed depth effect.
The Probe Lens — sometimes called a "Sonden-Objektiv" in German — is a tubular specialty lens that can be up to 60cm long and has a minimal front diameter of often only 2-3cm. It combines extreme close-focusing with deep focus and allows the camera to literally drive into scenes: through narrow openings, between objects, into liquids.
Usage
Probe Lenses became popular through advertising and social media content. The typical shot: the camera drives through the handle of a coffee cup, over a tabletop, and ends in a close-up of the product — all in one shot, all in focus.
Technology
Most Probe Lenses have a built-in LED ring light at the tip, because the lens itself gets so close to the subject that it casts shadows. The focus is fixed or minimally adjustable — sharpness is achieved through extreme depth of field on small sensor sizes.
