Party Color

Party Color refers to highly saturated color gels from manufacturers like Rosco and LEE, used on set to create vibrant lighting effects for party, club, or stage atmospheres.

Overview

Party Color (also Party Colors) is not a single fixture or lamp code, but a collective term used in rental and sales contexts for intensely saturated, colorful color gels. It refers to the intense, fully dyed colors from the assortments of common gel manufacturers such as Rosco (Roscolux) and LEE Filters – in contrast to subtle correction and conversion gels (e.g., CTO/CTB) or pure diffusion gels.

Gels are stretched or clamped in front of a light source to change its light color. While correction gels adjust the color temperature, Party Colors are used to deliberately tint a look – for example, for disco, nightclub, concert, or emergency scenes.

On-Set Usage

Party Colors are used wherever a scene is intended to have a colorful, mood-setting atmosphere:

  • Party, club, and stage scenes with strong red, blue, pink, or green tones
  • Accent and effect lighting (practicals, background wash, edge and strip lighting)
  • Mood setting – e.g., red for intimacy/drama, blue for nocturnal or cool looks

The gels are designed as heat-resistant, dyed polyester/plastic material and are usually mounted via gel frames, clips, or directly onto the fixture's barndoors. Since saturated colors fade over time due to heat and UV light, gels are considered consumables and are generally non-returnable in retail.
