Fire gag in which only part of the body burns — arm, back, or costume piece. Shorter and more controlled than a full-body burn, and far more common on set.
In a partial burn, a limited area on the performer burns: a sleeve, the back, a pant leg. The rest is protected, the burn duration is in the range of seconds, and the stunt is therefore much more manageable than a full burn.
The Setup
- Protective layers under the costume — Nomex, fire-resistant underwear, cooling gel.
- Fire gel on the area intended to burn.
- Oxygen supply for the performer if the face is near the flame.
- Extinguishing team off-camera, with blankets and CO₂, at least two people.
The Procedure
A cut word is agreed upon and a maximum duration is set — usually a few seconds. After "Cut," extinguishing begins immediately, not only when the camera is off. Repeats require a complete rebuild, not re-ignition.
