Overview
Panaspeed is a series of spherical prime lenses from manufacturer Panavision for large format cinematography. The optics are designed as a fast, large format-covering counterpart to the classic 35mm Primo series, transferring their characteristic look to larger sensor and film areas. These are explicitly spherical, not anamorphic lenses.
The standout feature is the consistent T1.4 aperture across the entire focal length range. According to Panavision, this makes PanaSpeed among the fastest large format optics available, making them particularly suitable for available light work and shallow depth of field.
Technical Specifications
| Feature | Value |
|---|
| Manufacturer | Panavision |
| Lens Type | Spherical Prime |
| Image Circle / Format | Large Format as well as 35mm |
| Maximum Aperture | T1.4 (across the entire series) |
| Mount | Panavision SP70 Mount |
| Front Diameter | 113mm (uniform across the series) |
The lenses are compatible with 35mm and large format film and digital cameras equipped with the SP70 mount. The uniform front diameter across the entire series simplifies the change of filters, matte box rings, and other front accessories when switching focal lengths.
Optical Characteristics
Panaspeed combines technically clean aberration correction with deliberately retained image flaws that give the image an organic, less clinical character. Compared to older Panavision optics, the manufacturer highlights improved close focus behavior, reduced focus breathing (anti-breathing), good resistance to veiling glare, and more even illumination of the image field.
On-Set Usage
Due to their high speed, Panaspeed lenses are frequently used for low-light scenes, night shoots, and shots requiring selective focus. The series has been used in feature films such as The Matrix Resurrections, Hustlers, and Flamin' Hot, as well as in series productions like Maid and Firefly Lane. As is customary with Panavision, the lenses are not sold but are exclusively rented through Panavision branches.
