Overview
On set, an offset (from English "to offset") refers to a grip extension that shifts a load – a light or camera – sideways from its actual support point. The term encompasses two related but distinct applications: the light offset arm and the camera offset (also known as "U-Bangi") in camera support.
Common principle: The center of gravity of the load is moved out of the axis of the tripod or dolly. This allows the supporting element (tripod leg, dolly column, jib arm) to be hidden or the load to be positioned in places that would otherwise be blocked by walls, columns, or structures. Due to the leverage, counter-balancing (sandbags) or a counterweight on the opposite side is mandatory.
Light Offset Arm
The light offset arm positions a fixture off-center in front of the tripod head, so that the tripod leg disappears behind a set wall or the fixture can be moved over a set element from above. Typical designs (Example Matthews/MSE Grip "Hollywood Extendable Offset Arm"):
| Variant | Mount | Extension |
|---|
| Baby | double 5/8" spud (Baby Pin) | 18"–25" (approx. 46–64 cm) |
| Junior | 1-1/8" Junior Receiver (Posi-V-Lock) | 18"–25" (approx. 46–64 cm) |
The arm is placed on a C-stand or a light stand; the fixture sits at the extended end.
Camera Offset / U-Bangi
In camera support, an offset shifts the camera out of the center axis of the dolly or from the end of a jib arm or column. This allows for extreme low angles, filming to the side of the dolly pivot point, or avoiding collisions with the set construction. Common designs utilize the Mitchell Mount, fitting J.L. Fisher dollies and other Mitchell products; common offset distances are approximately 10" and 24". Egripment offset arms are available with 100mm, 150mm, or Mitchell mounts depending on the model.
On-Set Usage
- Keep the tripod or dolly column out of frame by offsetting the load sideways.
- Move lights over set walls or behind set elements without showing the base.
- Position the camera at the end of a jib/crane for low or laterally shifted shots.
- Always counter-balance: The extended lever will tip the tripod or dolly without a sandbag/counterweight.
