NiSi Athena (Athena Prime) is a series of lightweight, full-frame cine prime lenses from NiSi featuring consistent optical and mechanical design across focal lengths.

Overview

The NiSi Athena Prime is a series of prime cine lenses from the Chinese optics and filter manufacturer NiSi, first introduced in 2023. The lenses cover full-frame sensors and are aimed at filmmakers seeking an optically high-quality, yet comparatively affordable and lightweight set.

A hallmark of the series is its consistent standardization: all focal lengths have the same physical size, the same front thread, and the same position for the focus and aperture rings. This allows for quick lens changes on set without repositioning follow focus motors or rebalancing a gimbal.

Technical Data

  • Image Circle: 46 mm – covers full-frame
  • Front Diameter: approx. 80 mm
  • Filter Thread: 77 mm (except 14 mm)
  • Gearing: 0.8 MOD (standard cine gearing) on focus and aperture rings
  • Focus Ring Rotation: approx. 300°
  • Aperture Blades: 10
  • Focus Breathing: greatly minimized (according to the manufacturer, practically unnoticeable)
  • Mounts: PL, Sony E, Canon RF, L-Mount (G-Mount depending on source); for mirrorless mounts, optional with drop-in filter holder

On-Set Use

Due to their uniform weight (around 800 g per lens according to tests) and identical physical size, the set is particularly suitable for gimbal and Steadicam work, as well as for shoots with frequent lens changes. The 0.8 MOD gearing allows operation with common follow focus systems and lens control motors without adjustment.

Optically, the lenses are designed for consistent character across the entire range, low chromatic aberration, and soft bokeh. In addition to the standard version, NiSi offers a visually tuned "Tuned" variant that produces a warmer, softer image look.

Perspectives

Cinematographer
