Mobile, self-contained large-format lighting system by Musco Lighting mounted on telescoping mast, remotely operated by a technician.

Overview

The Musco Light is a mobile, fully self-sufficient large-area lighting system from US manufacturer Musco Lighting (founded 1976, based in Oskaloosa, Iowa). It is not a single fixture, but a mobile lighting rig: a cluster of floodlights sits on a hydraulic telescopic mast (boom) mounted on a trailer or chassis. This allows large areas to be illuminated from a great distance and height without the need to set up a separate lighting tower or aerial work platform on set.

Originally developed for stadium and sports field lighting, Musco Light has also been used in film and television production since the 1980s – including in the feature film All the Right Moves (1983). According to the manufacturer, it has been used on numerous major feature film productions since then.

Construction and Operating Principle

  • Mobile and Self-Sufficient: The system is transportable on wheels and has its own power supply (onboard generator); it is therefore independent of the set's power grid.
  • Telescopic Mast: The lights are raised to a great height via an extendable hydraulic mast, allowing for high, uniform, and distant illumination.
  • Remote Control by Technicians: The system is operated by a trained Musco technician; the alignment and switching of the lights are done remotely. This reduces setup time and personnel costs on set.

Technical Data

Musco specifies the following key figures for one version of the Musco-Light system:

FeatureSpecification (Manufacturer's Specification)
Light Source15 remotely controlled 6K HMI floodlights
MastHydraulic boom, up to approx. 45 m height
Light Outputup to approx. 120 million candela
Illumination Areaup to approx. 3,700 m² at 250 lux, from distances up to approx. 0.8 km
Power SupplySelf-sufficient (onboard), grid-independent

Note: The exact values depend on the specific system configuration; Musco offers the system in various versions.

On-Set Use

In film use, Musco Light primarily serves as large-area base or effect lighting for exterior locations: night establishing shots, large exterior sets, stadium and arena scenes, crowd scenes, or raising the ambient light over a large area. Due to the HMI fixtures, the system provides daylight-like light. The central advantage over conventional set equipment lies in its mobility, self-sufficiency, and remote operation by a technician, which reduces setup and dismantling time and personnel costs.
