Luminair is a professional DMX lighting control app by Synthe FX for iPad, iPhone, and Mac that wirelessly controls film lights via Art-Net, sACN, and CRMX.
Overview
Luminair (spelled without a final "e", not to be confused with the general term "luminaire" for a light fixture) is commercial software for wireless DMX lighting control. It is developed by US manufacturer Synthe FX, LLC (founded by Ryan Hisey). The app runs on iPadOS, iOS, and macOS and is aimed at lighting technicians, gaffers, and DITs in film and television, as well as theater, event, and installation lighting designers.
Instead of being a fixture itself, Luminair replaces the classic lighting console: the mobile device becomes the control console, sending DMX values to fixtures, ballasts, and dimmers on set. This allows for control of intensity, color, color temperature, and, for moving lights, also position and movement.
Technical Specifications
The app works with common control protocols and manufacturer-open interfaces:
- Protocols: Art-Net, sACN (E1.31), and KiNET via integrated WLAN; additionally, DMX over radio via LumenRadio CRMX/BLE (including MoonLite, TimoTwo).
- Universes: 1 to 4 DMX universes (512 to 2048 channels) depending on the subscription model.
- Hardware: compatible with any Art-Net or sACN compliant DMX interface/node.
- RDM: RDM support via Art-Net (according to the manufacturer, in beta).
- Fixture Profiles: cloud-based fixture library with tens of thousands of profiles, whose profile data is licensed from Carallon.
The feature set includes programmable scenes, chases, and an effects engine with generators such as Movement, Oscillator, Color Looping, Fire, Water, and Television FX. Smart lights (e.g., Philips Hue/Signify, LIFX, Eve) can also be controlled via Apple HomeKit.
On-Set Usage
On a film set, Luminair serves as a mobile, wireless lighting console: the gaffer or lighting technician controls modern, DMX-capable LED fixtures and panels directly from the iPad without needing to set up a dedicated hardware console. With v3.5, profiles for film and television lighting manufacturers were specifically added (including LiteGear, Kino Flo, Cineo, ARRI). Typical applications include quickly setting lighting moods, color matching, and color temperature adjustments, as well as programmed effects for daylight simulations, fire, or TV flicker effects.
Synthe FX has offered Luminair since 2008 and positions it as one of the established mobile lighting control solutions. A prerequisite for practical operation is a reliable wireless network between the iOS/Mac device and the DMX node, which is why a dedicated, shielded Wi-Fi network for lighting control is often set up on set.
