Lee 724 "Ocean Blue" is a deep blue lighting gel from Lee Filters placed in front of fixtures to create moonlit and overcast sky atmospheres.

Overview

Lee 724 is the catalog number for the color effect light filter "Ocean Blue" from the Lighting Filters range by Lee Filters. It is not a spotlight, lamp, or grip equipment, but a colored film (colloquially "gel") placed in front of the light source to color the emitted light.

The 724 produces a deep, cool blue tone. According to the manufacturer's description, it is "useful at low light levels" and suitable for "overcast skies and moonlight" – it is therefore classically used for night, moonlight, and overcast moods.

Technical Data

Like most standard Lee color effect filters, the 724 is made of heat-resistant polyester film. Lee specifies a maximum operating temperature of 180 °C for its standard color effect polyester filters.

  • Full sheet: 0.53 m x 1.22 m (21" x 48")
  • Roll: 7.62 m x 1.22 m (25 ft x 48")

On-Set Usage

The 724 is inserted into a filter frame ("gel frame") or filter holder and placed in front of the spotlight, or alternatively attached to the barndoor using clamps or clips. As with all gels, ensure sufficient distance and ventilation to the light source, as the film can fade or melt if exposed to excessive heat.

Typical applications include night-for-night or day-for-night shooting, creating cool background or window lights, and setting a cold accent against warm foreground light. Due to its saturation, a deep blue filter like the 724 absorbs a comparatively large amount of light, which is why it is more often used with powerful sources or at deliberately low light levels.
