Lee 416: 3/4 White Diffusion gel by LEE Filters that softens fixture light with ~50% transmission (approximately 1 stop).

Overview

Lee 416 is a diffusion filter (lighting filter) from the British manufacturer LEE Filters. The official product designation is 416 Three Quarter White Diffusion – meaning a 3/4 diffusion. It is not a lighting fixture or a grip tool, but a color-neutral diffusion material that is hung or clipped in front of a light source to soften hard light and render shadow edges more gently.

The 416 belongs to LEE's White Diffusion series, which is offered in several gradations. Within this series, the 416 is considered to be in the medium to stronger diffusion range – stronger than, for example, 1/2 or 1/4 variants, but weaker than the full White Diffusion (216).

Technical Data

The following values are from the official LEE Filters datasheet:

PropertyValue
Manufacturer / DesignationLEE Filters – 416 Three Quarter White Diffusion
Light Transmission (Transmission Y)approx. 50 %
Stop Lossapprox. 1 stop
Measurement ReferenceSource C / 6774 K
Base MaterialPolyester

The filter is available as individual sheets (approximately 21 × 24 inches) as well as in rolls (48 inches wide × 25 feet). Dimensions may vary slightly depending on the distributor.

On-Set Usage

The 416 is typically used directly on the lighting fixture – for example, in the filter frame, in barndoor clips, or with clothespins on a frame. It diffuses the light, enlarges the effective light area, and thus ensures softer transitions on faces and surfaces.

  • Softening hard sources like Fresnel, PAR, or open-faced lights.
  • Reducing harsh shadow edges and specular highlights.
  • Enlarging the perceived light source for a more flattering result.

As a polyester filter, diffusion is usually mounted with some distance from the light source to avoid heat buildup and deformation. Due to the light loss of approximately one stop, the reduction in brightness should be considered during exposure planning.
