Lee 252 is the Eighth White Diffusion (1/8 White) from Lee Filters – a subtle diffusion gel for soft light scattering.

Overview

Lee 252 is the designation for "Eighth White Diffusion" from the range of Lee Filters, one of the leading manufacturers of lighting gels for film, TV, and photography. The gel belongs to the "White Diffusion" filter series, which makes light sources softer and more even without significantly altering the light's color. At 1/8 strength, Lee 252 is the weakest in this series and absorbs only minimal light – it is used when a hard light source needs only a touch of softening.

Within the Lee diffusion strengths, 252 is positioned below Quarter White Diffusion (Lee 251) and Half White Diffusion (Lee 250). The gel number 252 is commonly used across manufacturers and is usually requested on set simply as "one eighth white" or "Lee 252."

On-Set Use

Lee 252 is stretched directly in front of the light source or placed in a filter frame to lightly diffuse the light. Since it absorbs hardly any light, it is suitable when you want to largely maintain brightness and only minimally soften highlights and hard shadow edges. Typical applications include subtle softening of skin tones, mitigating a point light source, or creating graduated diffusion by combining several weak strengths.

Like all lighting gels, Lee 252 is mounted at a distance from hot light sources; the distance between the lamp and the gel further influences the diffusion effect. For stronger diffusion, higher strengths of the White Diffusion series are used instead (e.g., Lee 251, 250, or 216).
