KODAK VERITA 200D is a medium-speed, daylight-balanced color negative motion picture film. The catalog designation is 5206 for 35mm and 7206 for 16mm; the stock is available in 65mm, 35mm, and 16mm. It is Kodak's first completely new color negative motion picture film in years and is intentionally positioned alongside, not within, the VISION3 range.

What Makes It Different from VISION3

The crucial difference is stated on the data sheet and is unusual because it's formulated as a limitation: VERITA 200D has a shorter exposure latitude than VISION3. The trade-offs are higher color saturation, deeper blacks, warmer skin tones, and a different rendering in shadows and highlights.

This is a creative choice, not a technical regression. Wide exposure latitude is a safety net—it forgives underexposure and allows for grading flexibility. Narrow latitude does not, but instead, contrast and color are established in the negative rather than later at the controls. Those who shoot VERITA decide earlier and correct less.

Construction

The stock utilizes Kodak's Dye-Layering technology. It also features an anti-halation undercoat to prevent halation from bright light sources and a process-stable antistatic back layer that reduces dust accumulation—both aspects that become noticeable in the scan, not on the shooting day.

Availability

VERITA 200D is not regular catalog stock. It is supplied exclusively through Kodak's distribution channels as a special order item. For budgeting, this means planning for lead time and clarifying availability in the desired format before, not after, shooting schedules are set.

Positioning in the Stock List

On the daylight side, VERITA 200D sits alongside VISION3 250D and 50D. On the tungsten side, 200T and 500T remain untouched. In mixed shooting schedules, it typically appears as a daylight stock alongside a 500T. Two points then need to be considered in planning: two separate stock orders and two different initial output curves in the scan, which will need to be reconciled in grading.
