Kamerabühne

German collective term for the camera's moving support equipment — dolly, crane, and track system. The crew department that builds and operates this equipment is called the camera staging or dolly department.

Camera Stage refers to two things, both interconnected: the equipment on which the camera is moved, and the department that builds and operates it. In German-speaking regions, the term covers what is divided between Grip and Dolly in English — dollies, tracks, cranes, jibs, as well as tripods, flags, and everything that carries light and camera.

What it includes

  • Dolly and Track. The dolly on laid track — the most reliable way to achieve a smooth move. Laying and leveling the track is the time-consuming part, not the movement itself.
  • Crane and Jib. From short jib arm solutions to telescopic cranes with remote heads. Counterweights, ground clearance, and a dedicated operator are part of this.
  • Tripods and Heads. Fluid and geared heads, hi-hats, baby legs — the stationary half of the same department.

Why it is a separate department

Because camera movement must be planned, built, and repeatable. A move that is perfect on the first take and different on the fourth is unusable in the edit. The stage therefore builds markers, stops, and brakes — so that the same movement looks identical twenty times.
