Seven-lens set of Soviet medium format optics from 30 to 150mm, rehoused by IRONGLASS for Fujifilm GFX, ARRI Alexa 65 and Blackmagic Ursa Cine.

SMF stands for Soviet Medium Format. In this database, IRONGLASS is otherwise represented by rehoused full-frame glass—Helios, Mir, Jupiter, all calculated for the 24x36 format. The SMF line comes from a different corner: it consists of optics built for 6x6 medium format cameras, meaning for an image circle that practically didn't exist in cinema until a few years ago.

The Set

Seven focal lengths from 30 to 150 millimeters: Zodiak-8B 30mm f/3.5, Mir-26B 45mm f/3.5, Mir-38B 65mm f/3.5, Volna-3 80mm f/2.8, Vega-12B 90mm f/2.8, Vega-28B 120mm f/2.8, and Kaleinar-3B 150mm f/2.8. This is not a consistently fast set—f/3.5 at the short ends is slow by cine standards. Those who rent these optics are not renting them for that.

What the Image Circle Covers

On a Fujifilm GFX, the set corresponds to a full-frame equivalent field of view of approximately 24 to 120 millimeters; on an ARRI Alexa 65, it covers even more. This is precisely the reason for the line's existence: the number of digital cameras with sensors beyond full-frame has increased from two to a good dozen in a few years—GFX 100 II, Alexa 65, Blackmagic Ursa Cine 17K—and the market for affordable vintage optics for this format is practically empty. The alternatives are Hasselblad and Mamiya calculations at significantly different prices.

What the Optics Do

The Soviet medium format calculations are from the same school as their better-known full-frame siblings and share their characteristics: soft contrast, pronounced flares, visible field curvature towards the edges, and a bokeh that noticeably rotates in the Vega calculations. On a sensor that fully utilizes the image circle, all of this becomes more visible than on Super 35—the corners are where a 1970s calculation is least corrected.

What the Rehousing Achieves

As with any modification: not the optics themselves, but their usability. Uniform front diameter across the set, uniform gear ring position, extended focus throw with usable markings. The original lenses have focus throws of less than 90 degrees and scales intended for manual operation; without modification, a focus assistant cannot operate them. The character remains untouched—that's the difference from lens tuning.

Classification

The SMF line is the most affordable way to get a complete vintage set for digital medium format. It is not and does not aim to be precision optics. Those who rent it opt for a signature that breaks down at the edges and flares up in backlight—on a sensor that magnifies every one of these effects.
