Waterproof hydraulic telescoping camera crane by Chapman/Leonard, available in 15' to 70' reach.
The Hydrascope is a series of telescoping camera cranes manufactured by US-based Chapman/Leonard Studio Equipment. Unlike a classic crane with a fixed arm length, the Hydrascope arm extends and retracts hydraulically, allowing the lens height to be changed during a shot without repositioning the entire setup. Its waterproof construction is a distinctive feature: the crane is designed for rain scenes, spray, and dusty or harsh shooting conditions.
Operation is via a rotating handset, which the manufacturer claims replicates the booming feel of a dolly. The nose allows for quick switching between over- and under-slung operation and accepts standard Mitchell Mount heads.
The series is categorized by maximum arm reach (in feet). Available models:
Example values for two models according to manufacturer specifications (Chapman/Leonard):
| Parameter | Hydrascope 40 | Hydrascope 70 |
|---|---|---|
| Fully Extended | 40' | 70' |
| Fully Retracted | 8' | 10' |
| Telescopic Travel | 32' | 60' |
| Max. Nose Load (Under-Slung) | 160 lbs | 250 lbs |
| Max. Speed | 7'/s | 7'/s |
| Rotation | 360° | 360° |
| Power Supply | 30 V DC (Chapman or Lithium Battery) | 30 V DC (Chapman or Lithium Battery) |
Note: Total weight depends heavily on the base and camera package (the Hydrascope 70 with Hydrabase, M7, and a standard camera package reaches approximately 15,000 lbs). Values for other models can be found in their respective data sheets.
The Hydrascope is primarily used where large, dynamic camera movements with variable height are required, such as in commercials, action, and VFX-heavy productions. The telescoping function allows for ascents and descents that a rigid arm cannot achieve. Due to its weight, hydraulics, and counterweights, operation requires an experienced grip team and a correspondingly stable or mobile base (e.g., UCS-Base, Hydrabase, or vehicle mount).

Mit dem Hydrascope kann ich dramatische vertikale Bewegungen realisieren - von Bodennähe bis hoch über die Szene in einer einzigen Fahrt.
Der Hydrascope ist ein Klassiker unter den Chapman-Kranen. Bewährt an unzähligen Hollywood-Produktionen.
