HSI Mode

HSI Mode: color control system on RGB LED film lights that adjusts hue, saturation, and intensity for precise color tuning.

Overview

HSI stands for Hue, Saturation, and Intensity. It is one of the standard color control modes on color-mixing LED film lights (RGB, RGBW, or RGBWW fixtures) and is found on practically all modern full-color lights, such as those from Aputure, Astera, or ARRI. Unlike direct RGB mixing, where three individual color channels are balanced against each other, HSI is based on human color perception: you first select a hue, then determine its purity, and finally set the intensity. This makes operation on set more intuitive and faster.

The Three Parameters

  • Hue: Selects the color on the color wheel. The value is given in degrees from 0° to 360° (e.g., Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, Magenta).
  • Saturation: Controls the purity of the color, i.e., the ratio between the selected hue and white. Low saturation results in pale, pastel tones; high saturation results in strong, rich colors.
  • Intensity: Regulates the overall brightness of the light, regardless of hue and saturation.

Distinction from Other Modes

HSI is just one of several operating modes that color-mixing LED lights typically offer:

ModePurpose
CCTPure white light along the Kelvin scale (color temperature), often with Green/Magenta correction
HSIColor mixing via hue, saturation, and intensity
RGB / RGBWDirect input of individual color channel values
FX / EffectsPredefined lighting effects (fire, police light, TV flicker, etc.)

Some manufacturers extend HSI: Aputure, for example, offers HSIC+ on newer lights, which additionally incorporates an adjustable white point (CCT) and a Plus/Minus Green correction to mix color and white light more cleanly and allow for softer transitions.

Use on Set

HSI Mode is the fastest method to set a specific color without using gels: select the desired hue, adjust saturation and intensity, done. It is suitable for colored backgrounds and accents, effect lighting, recreating practical sources, and mood lighting. Since the values can be precisely noted and reproduced, HSI also facilitates restoring a look during pick-up shoots.
