Chinese manufacturer of wireless video transmission systems and camera monitoring devices — an affordable alternative to established brands like Teradek.

Technical Details

The Mars series forms the core product line with models like Mars 300, Mars 400S, and Mars 4K. These support resolutions up to 4K60p via HDMI inputs, while transmission occurs at 1080p60. The devices use H.264 compression and offer multiple output functions for up to four simultaneous receivers. Typical transmission power is 20 dBm; power is supplied via Sony NP-F batteries or DC input (7-17V). The Cosmo series targets the consumer market with more compact dimensions (approx. 108 x 68 x 18 mm) and USB-C connectors.

History & Development

Hollyland started in 2013 with simple wireless systems for the broadcast sector. The breakthrough came in 2018 with the first Mars generation, which enabled affordable wireless transmission for independent productions for the first time. In 2020, the Mars 400S followed with improved range and app control. The Mars 4K, introduced in 2022, supports native 4K transmission for the first time and established Hollyland as a serious alternative to established manufacturers like Teradek or SmallHD.

Practical Application in Film

Wireless monitoring allows directors and script supervisors to check the image away from the camera, especially during Steadicam or drone shots. On the set of "The Mandalorian," similar systems are used for coordination between camera teams and video village. A typical workflow involves the camera's HDMI output feeding the transmitter, with receivers connecting to reference monitors or tablets. The advantage is flexibility without cable runs; the disadvantage is potential interference with multiple systems on set.

Comparison & Alternatives

Hollyland directly competes with Teradek Bolt systems but offers significantly lower price points (Mars 400S: approx. €600 vs. Bolt 500 XT: €2,400). Accsoon CineEye and DJI Transmission represent further alternatives. While Teradek systems offer higher ranges and zero-latency transmission, Hollyland excels in user-friendliness and value for money. For high-budget productions, Teradek or Paralinx remain the standard; Hollyland dominates the mid-price range for documentary and independent films.

From the crafts

Perspectives

Cinematographer
