FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA 55

The FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA 55 is Fujifilm's first true cinema variant of the GFX medium format system. With a sensor of 43.8×32.9mm, it sits significantly above full frame (24×36mm) and close to the ARRI Alexa 65 (54.12×25.58mm), but closer to the square 4:3 aspect ratio rather than the wide 16:9. The camera's central stylistic decision is the 4K Open Gate 4:3 — a sensor readout that fully utilizes the image circle of vintage medium format photo lenses (Mamiya 645, Hasselblad, Pentax 67).

Unlike the Alexa 65 (rental-only, six-figure purchase price), the GFX ETERNA 55 is purchasable and modular — Fujifilm positions it as a democratizing medium format cine solution. Internal recording to Apple ProRes 422 HQ makes workflow setup possible without an external recorder.

Known limitation: the sensor readout time is slower than that of modern cine sensors (Alexa 35, Sony Venice 2). DP Richard Götze comments: ‘best suited for slower, more calculated projects with a lot of room to breathe’ — meaning it's not ideal for handheld action, fast pans, or high-speed shoots. This aligns with the camera's positioning for commercial hero frames, fashion films, and portrait-oriented shoots.

The camera is still in early adopter status in 2026; the ‘next version’ has been hinted at by Fujifilm (Götze: ‘I'm also excited and curious to see how the next version of the camera might look and perform’).
