Automatic shutter speed adjustment to eliminate LED flicker via internal frequency sensors. ARRI Alexa Mini LF and RED V-Raptor detect 25–300 Hz with ±0.1 Hz precision.

Technical Details

FSI systems measure the frequency of ambient lighting via internal sensors and automatically adjust the shutter speed. Modern cameras like the ARRI Alexa Mini LF or RED V-Raptor offer FSI modes with adjustment accuracy of ±0.1 Hz. The system detects frequency fluctuations between 25-300 Hz and can also determine a compromise value in mixed lighting of different frequencies. High-end variants like Sony FX9's FSI+ analyze up to 8 different image areas separately and use local adjustments of the rolling shutter timing.

History & Development

Panasonic introduced the first commercially available FSI system in the Varicam LT in 2018, after LED lighting increasingly caused flicker problems. In 2019, Sony developed an advanced system with the FX9 that could also detect PWM dimmers of LED panels. ARRI integrated FSI into the Alexa Mini LF in 2020 with software version 7.0. Canon followed in 2021 with the C70, which for the first time supported FSI even in 4K120p mode.

Practical Use in Film

In "Dune" (2021), cinematographer Greig Fraser used FSI modes for the scenes in the space stations to eliminate the flicker of the practical LED panels. In "The Batman" (2022), FSI enabled the use of inexpensive LED street lighting without extensive post-production. Modern productions save an average of 2-3 hours of post-production per shooting day thanks to FSI. However, the workflow requires consistency – frequency changes during a take lead to visible exposure jumps.

Comparison & Alternatives

FSI differs from traditional sync scan through automatic adjustment without manual calibration. High-speed cameras like the Phantom TMX 7510 use variable ND filters for flicker reduction instead. Post-production solutions like DaVinci Resolve's Flicker-Free plugin achieve similar results but cost render time and can produce motion artifacts. FSI fails with mixed lighting from different manufacturers – in such cases, manual shutter speed adjustment or the use of HMI lighting remains the more reliable alternative.

Perspectives

Cinematographer
