FEL is an ANSI lamp code for a single-ended 1000W halogen lamp (3200 K, G9.5 base) used in studio and stage lighting fixtures.

Overview

FEL is not a proper noun or an abbreviation, but a three-digit ANSI lamp code. Such codes (e.g., FEL, FKJ, BTL, EHF) uniquely identify a precisely defined lamp across manufacturers based on wattage, base, bulb shape, and voltage. A lamp designated FEL is therefore interchangeable between different manufacturers.

Specifically, FEL designates a single-ended tungsten-halogen lamp (quartz halogen) with 1000 watts and a 2-pin G9.5 base. It belongs to the class of studio/stage/theater lamps (often marked SSTV) and delivers a warm white light typical for tungsten-balanced camera and film technology.

Technical Data

The following values refer to a standard FEL lamp (manufacturer data Osram/Sylvania, 120V version). Exact figures may vary slightly depending on the manufacturer.

ParameterValue
Lamp TypeTungsten-Halogen (Quartz Halogen), Single-Ended
Wattage1000 W
Voltage120 V (Standard Version)
Color Temperature3200 K (Tungsten-Balanced)
BaseG9.5 (2-Pin)
FilamentCC-8
Luminous Fluxapprox. 27,000–27,500 lm
Average Lifespanapprox. 300 hours
Color Rendering (CRI)close to 100

Additionally, related codes exist for different mains voltages; the 230/240V variant in a comparable design is, for example, designated as FEP. Due to the standard voltage of 120V, the classic FEL is primarily common in the North American 120V electrical grid.

Use on Set

The FEL is a classic replacement lamp/light source for tungsten-based studio and stage spotlights with G9.5 sockets, including ERS (Ellipsoidal Reflector Spotlights)/profile spotlights and studio lights. It is used as an interchangeable bulb in fixtures specified for this ANSI code.

With 3200K and very high color rendering, the FEL is designed for artificial light/tungsten-balanced operation and mixes cleanly with other 3200K tungsten equipment. As a halogen lamp, it is dimmable; when dimmed, the color temperature shifts warmer, as with all incandescent lamps. Standard halogen handling rules apply: do not touch with bare fingers (skin oils can burn into the quartz envelope and shorten lifespan), allow to cool down, and observe the permissible burning position.

Special Case: Calibration Lamp

Beyond stage and studio applications, specially burned-in and calibrated FEL lamps are used in laboratories as radiance standards (radiance/irradiance standards), for example, for calibrating photometers, light meters, and spectrometers according to NIST standards. Such certified units are significantly more expensive than standard studio lamps.
