EGT: ANSI lamp code for a 1000W tungsten-halogen bulb (120V, 3200K) with G22 bipost base, used in 1kW Fresnel fixtures.

Overview

EGT is not a device or a manufacturer, but an ANSI lamp code – a three-letter abbreviation from the American National Standards Institute that uniquely defines a specific incandescent lamp bulb by wattage, voltage, base, and bulb shape. Lamps with the same ANSI code are interchangeable regardless of the manufacturer (GE, Osram/Sylvania, Philips, Ushio, etc.).

The EGT is a single-ended Tungsten-Halogen lamp in the 1kW class. It is one of the classic discharge lamps for 1kW Fresnel spotlights in film, television, and studio production.

Like all Tungsten lamps, the EGT delivers a constant color temperature of 3200 K, achieving very high color rendering. The 120V design is tailored to the North American mains; in 230V regions, care must be taken to select the appropriate counterpart when fitting a spotlight.

On-Set Usage

The EGT is used as a bulb in 1kW Fresnel spotlights from various manufacturers, including the Arri 1000W Fresnel, the Mole-Richardson Baby 1000W (Baby Fresnel), and the LTM Pepper 1000. It is therefore one of the standard lamps for classic Tungsten lighting setups.

  • When changing lamps, do not touch the glass bulb with bare fingers – skin oils can burn in and lead to premature failure; use gloves or a cloth.
  • Tungsten lamps get hot; allow them to cool down before changing.
  • For daylight mixing (5600 K), a conversion filter (CTB) is required, which reduces the light output.
  • Before purchasing, check the ANSI code instead of the manufacturer's designation – this ensures mechanical and electrical compatibility with the spotlight.
