EGN is an ANSI lamp code for a single-ended 500W halogen bulb (120V, 3200K) used in studio and stage lighting fixtures.

Overview

EGN is not a manufacturer or a device type, but a three-digit ANSI lamp code. ANSI codes are cross-manufacturer identifiers for incandescent and halogen lamps: lamps from different manufacturers with the same code are interchangeable in their core electrical and mechanical data (wattage, voltage, base, bulb shape). A lamp designated "EGN" from Osram/Sylvania, GE, Ushio, or other suppliers will therefore fit into the same socket and deliver the same nominal output.

The EGN is a single-ended Tungsten-Halogen lamp with a color temperature of artificial light (3200 K). It is used in studio, stage, and TV spotlights whose sockets are designed for the associated bipost base.

Technical Data

Values consistently stated across multiple manufacturer and dealer specifications (Osram/Sylvania, GE, Ushio, B&H, ProLampSales):

CharacteristicValue
Wattage500 W
Voltage120 V
Color Temperature3200 K (Tungsten/Artificial Light)
BaseG22 (Medium Bipost)
Bulb ShapeT6 (tubular)
Lamp TypeTungsten-Halogen, Single-Ended
Average Lifespanapprox. 100 hours
Luminous Fluxapprox. 13,000 lumens

The operating voltage of 120 V is designed for the North American mains standard. On 230 V mains, the lamp is operated accordingly via the ballast characteristics of the spotlight or power supply; when selecting a lamp, attention must be paid to the voltage specification.

Use on Set

As a 3200 K halogen lamp, the EGN delivers warm artificial light that can be mixed with other Tungsten sources on set without further conversion. For daylight setups, the light must be corrected using conversion filters (CTB) or camera white balance.

  • Handling: As with all halogen lamps, the glass bulb should not be touched with bare fingers, as skin oils on the hot quartz glass can shorten the lifespan.
  • Replacement: When repurchasing, the ANSI code EGN is crucial, not the manufacturer's brand – every EGN lamp fits mechanically and electrically into the intended G22 bipost spotlight.
  • Lifespan: The short nominal lifespan (approx. 100 h) is typical for high-power studio halogen lamps optimized for high luminous efficacy and stable color temperature rather than long service life.
