DoPchoice Snapbag

Overview

The SNAPBAG is a collapsible softbox from Munich-based manufacturer DoPchoice GmbH. It is a light shaper (light modifier) for film and TV lighting that converts hard light from a fixture into soft, even area light. A characteristic feature is the patented Snap Technology: Unlike classic softboxes, where multiple rods are individually inserted into a speedring, the SNAPBAG snaps into shape via a self-tensioning spring frame. A separate speedring is eliminated; the box is attached directly to the respective fixture housing.

DoPchoice was founded in 2008 by cinematographer Stefan Karle and specializes in light shapers for professional film and TV production. The SNAPBAG, along with the SNAPGRID eggcrate grid and the SNAPBOX softbox solution for flexible LED panels and LED tiles, forms the core product family.

Construction and Functionality

• Self-Tensioning Frame: The spring frame unfolds and holds its shape without loose small parts that can be lost or broken.
• Mounting without Speedring: Depending on the model, the SNAPBAG is attached directly to the fixture via integrated elastic loops, Velcro, or fixture-specific mounts; the elastic tension ensures a secure hold and consistent shape. A speedring is generally not required, but is offered optionally by the manufacturer.
• Interior Material: A highly reflective, metallic-coated interior surface maximizes light output.
• Diffusion: Diffusers on the light-emitting surface (one or two layers, depending on the model) create the soft light.
• Transport: The SNAPBAG folds flat into an included carrying bag.

According to the manufacturer, the SNAPBAG can be set up in about 30 seconds and taken down in about 10 seconds.

Forms and Compatibility

The SNAPBAG is offered in several geometries, including rectangular, octagonal/round, and as a lantern/dome (omnidirectional output). DoPchoice manufactures fixture-specific Direct-Fit versions that are precisely fitted to common LED fixtures and panels. Well-known collaborations and compatible devices include Litepanels (e.g., Astra 1x1, Gemini), Rosco/DMG Lumière, Astera (Hydra/HydraPanel), and Nanlux, among others. In addition, there are generic variants for COB fixtures and panels.

Use on Set

The SNAPBAG serves as a quickly deployable soft light shaper for interview, portrait, and area lighting. Due to its minute setup and takedown times, it is particularly common in documentary, ENG, and commercial productions with frequent location changes. To control spill light, the matching SNAPGRID eggcrate (e.g., in a 40° version) can be attached to the light-emitting surface via Velcro; it bundles the soft light precisely without compromising light quality.
