Technical Details

The DMG MINI weighs 680 grams and measures 170 x 170 x 35 mm with a maximum power consumption of 60 watts. The unit uses high-quality OSRAM LEDs with a CRI value of over 96 and features DMX-512 control as well as local controls. The color temperature can be continuously adjusted between 2,800K and 10,000K, and a full-color RGB function offers over 16.7 million color variations. The beam angle is 55 degrees without accessories, but can be modified with barn doors, softboxes, and grids.

History & Development

DMG Lumière launched the DMG MINI in 2018 as a complement to the successful DMG series. The French company, founded in 2010 by Olivier Girard, initially established itself with larger LED panels like the DMG MAXI and SL1. The MINI was developed out of the demand for mobile, battery-compatible lights for documentary work and tight shooting situations. In 2020, a firmware update followed, which further improved color accuracy and introduced additional DMX modes.

Practical Use in Film

Camera crews appreciate the DMG MINI for close-ups and as eye lights, as its compact design can be easily positioned close to faces. In documentary productions, it often serves as fill light for interviews or for subtle background illumination. The silent LED technology makes it ideal for sound recording, while the variable color temperature allows for quick adjustments to changing lighting conditions. The low power consumption enables hours of battery operation via V-mount batteries.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to the larger DMG MAXI (25 x 25 cm, 200 watts), the MINI offers greater mobility with lower light output. Direct competitors include the Aputure MC (smaller light surface, but more compact) and the Quasar Science Q-LED X (similar performance, different form factor).
