Mounted on the nose or side of a helicopter, several gyro-stabilized axes decouple the camera from any vibration and movement of the carrier. The result is the smooth, floating aerial images with long focal lengths known from nature documentaries and action chases — shots that would be physically impossible with a rigidly mounted rig.
How the System Differs from a Drone Gimbal
A drone gimbal stabilizes a lightweight camera over short distances; a Cineflex-class system carries cinema cameras with heavy telephoto lenses and keeps them pointed at a target, even at high flight speeds and turbulence. It is operated from the cabin: an operator controls pan, tilt, and focus via a remote control, while the pilot flies the trajectory — aerial shots of this kind are teamwork between the cockpit and the camera station.
Practical Application
Typically, a complete package is booked, including the system, operator, and approved carrier — mounting it on the aircraft requires certification and is not something a grip can improvise on the shooting day. For many tasks, drones have now replaced the helicopter ball; however, whenever long focal lengths, high speeds, great altitudes, or long flight times are required, the gyro-stabilized ball on a manned carrier remains the tool of choice.
