Vintage Canon FD still lenses professionally rehoused into cine-grade mechanical barrels with gear rings and PL mount for cinema production.

Overview

Canon FD (Cine Rehoused) refers to vintage photo lenses from Canon's FD mount system that are rebuilt ("rehoused") by specialized workshops into new, cinema-ready mechanical housings. The optical elements of the original SLR lenses are largely retained, while the entire mechanics – focus and aperture rings, mount, and front diameter – are replaced with professional cine components.

The original Canon FD system is a manual interchangeable lens mount for 35mm SLR cameras from the 1970s and 1980s. Over the years, a very wide range of focal lengths appeared, from fisheye to long telephoto. As these lenses are relatively inexpensive to acquire used and possess an appreciated "vintage" character, they have become a popular basis for rehousing projects.

Optical Character

Canon FD lenses are valued for their rather soft, organic image rendering compared to modern cine optics:

  • Warm color reproduction and gentle, low contrast
  • Soft transition from sharpness to blur, pleasant ("painterly") bokeh
  • Pronounced, but mostly controlled flares thanks to the original S.S.C. (Super Spectra Coating)
  • Skin tones are rendered softly and naturally

Cinematographers often compare the FD look to Canon's legendary K35 cine optics; rehoused FD sets are considered a significantly more affordable alternative with a similar character.

What is Changed During Rehousing

The conversion aims to make old photo lenses suitable for set use. Typical measures:

  • Mount: Standard PL mount; depending on the provider, LPL, EF, or E-mount are also available
  • Focus Throw: Significantly extended rotation for precise focus pulling (Whitepoint Optics states 280–300°, GL Optics 170–330° depending on focal length)
  • Gears: Uniform cine standard gears on focus and aperture for follow focus and motors
  • Front Diameter: Unified across the set (e.g., 95 mm or 110 mm) so that matte boxes and filters fit without conversion
  • Aperture: Often replacement of the original 8-blade iris with a rounder or more-bladed iris for more pleasant bokeh
  • Mechanics: Robust metal housing, stepless aperture, uniform physical length/center of gravity for quick lens changes

Providers and Set Usage

Rehousing services for Canon FD are offered by, among others, GL Optics, TLS (True Lens Services), Whitepoint Optics, Zero Optik, and Iron Glass. The sets are rented through numerous rental houses (e.g., Keslow Camera, AbelCine). They are used where a deliberately vintage, soft, and cinematic look is desired, which sets itself apart from the clinically sharp image of modern optics – while simultaneously offering modern, set-ready mechanics (PL mount, gears, unified fronts).

From the crafts

Perspectives

Cinematographer
