Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera — line of compact cinema cameras (Original 2013, 4K 2018, 6K 2019, 6K Pro 2021 with internal ND, 6K G2 2022). Up to 13 stops dynamic range, dual ISO, Blackmagic RAW; the internal ND system is exclusive to the 6K Pro.

History & Development

Blackmagic Design introduced the first Pocket Cinema Camera at NAB in 2013, aiming to democratize cinema-quality for $995. The 4K version with a larger MFT sensor followed in 2018, and the 6K variant with an EF mount and Super35 sensor in 2019. The 6K Pro from 2021 added internal ND filters (2, 4, 6 stops), improved battery technology, and professional XLR audio inputs. Each generation systematically lowered the barrier to entry for RAW workflows.

Practical Use in Film

Independent productions like "The Jungle Book: Origins" utilized early Pocket models for second-unit shots and action sequences. Its compact form factor enables gimbal use, car rigs, and crash cams without compromising quality. The native Blackmagic RAW codec integrates seamlessly into DaVinci Resolve workflows. Typical applications include documentary work, music videos, and low-budget feature films where the price-performance ratio is crucial.

Comparison & Alternatives

Unlike the professional URSA series, the Pocket lacks XLR connections (except for the 6K Pro) and professional monitoring outputs. Direct competitors include the Sony FX30, Canon EOS R5C, and Panasonic GH6. The Pocket excels with its affordably priced RAW recording and DaVinci Resolve integration, while Sony and Canon offer superior autofocus systems. For pure content creation, mirrorless cameras are better suited, but for narrative workflows with intensive color grading, the Pocket remains unbeatable.

Perspectives

Cinematographer
