Aputure Light Dome SE

Overview

The Aputure Light Dome SE is a round softbox light modifier (Bowens Mount) from the manufacturer Aputure. It is mounted in front of point-source lights with a Bowens connection – such as the Aputure LS and amaran COB series (e.g., 300d/600d, amaran 100d/200d) – and transforms their hard, directional light into a soft, diffused source. The "SE" stands for a more cost-effective, lighter version of the original Light Dome series.

The SE is constructed as a circular softbox (Parabolic Style) and, due to its circular light-emitting surface, produces soft shadows and round reflections (catchlights) in the eyes – typical for interview, portrait, and beauty setups. The 16 flexible fiberglass rods maintain the round shape. Compared to the larger Light Dome models, it is more compact and designed for mobile setups.

On-Set Use

The Light Dome SE provides the typical soft, flattering characteristic of a softbox and is suitable for key light in interviews, portraits, and talking-head setups. The softness and light loss can be controlled via the two front diffusers of different strengths and the internal baffle; the 45° grid limits side spill light and makes the light more directional, for example, to cleanly shadow backgrounds or adjacent surfaces.

Due to its low weight and Bowens compatibility, it is designed as a mobile light modifier for compact setups and on the go. As with all Bowens softboxes, the respective light source is attached via the speed ring/Bowens adapter; the light output and color temperature depend entirely on the connected light source, not on the softbox itself.
