The term is a tribute to the legendary American first assistant director and unit production manager Abraham "Abby" Singer (1917–2003), who was known for preparing his team in a timely manner for the approaching end of the shoot.

Abby Singer worked as a First Assistant Director and Unit Production Manager on numerous Hollywood productions and TV series from the 1950s to the 1990s. His habit of informing the crew during the second-to-last shot became so legendary that the term became established throughout the film industry.
