Compact 150W tungsten Fresnel spotlight with 50mm lens and variable beam focus (spot/flood); ARRI 150 is the reference model.

Overview

A "150W Fresnel" refers to the smallest common class of tungsten Fresnel spotlights used in film and photography: a Fresnel lens spotlight with a 150-watt lamp output and a small lens. The most frequently cited reference model in the industry is the ARRI 150 from the ARRI Junior series (order number L1.79360). Characteristic of any Fresnel spotlight is the Fresnel lens (named after Augustin Fresnel), which produces a soft-edged, easily shapeable beam of light whose beam angle can be continuously adjusted between a narrow spot and a wide flood position by moving the lamp.

Its low power makes the 150W Fresnel the smallest tool in the classic tungsten Fresnel set (below 300 W, 650 W, 1 kW, and 2 kW). It delivers hard, controlled point light for accents, edges, and small areas, not for large-scale illumination.

On-Set Usage

The 150W Fresnel is a precision tool for small, controlled lighting setups:

  • Accent and Edge Lighting: Creates catchlights in the eyes (eye-light), separates actors from the background, or illuminates individual props.
  • Tight Spaces and Sets: Easily positioned on small stands, Magic Arms, or within confined sets thanks to its approx. 1 kg weight and 16 mm spigot.
  • Interviews and Product Shots: Used as a fine fill light where larger heads would deliver too much output.

Like all Fresnel spotlights, it accepts accessories: barndoors, scrims, gel frames, and snoots for further shaping the light. The spot/flood adjustment controls the beam angle and intensity; dimming is done via an external dimming system, with the tungsten light becoming warmer (redder) as it is dimmed.
