Portable digital recorder by Zoom Corporation for film audio, featuring XLR inputs, 48V phantom power, and up to 8 simultaneous recording tracks.

Technical Details

Current models like the H6 offer six simultaneous recording tracks, two XLR/TRS combo inputs with 48V phantom power, and interchangeable microphone capsules. The built-in microphones achieve a sound pressure level of 140 dB SPL, with a frequency response ranging from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The device weighs 280 grams and runs on four AA batteries for up to 20 hours. The H8 expands this to eight tracks with timecode synchronization and USB audio interface functionality. All models feature built-in limiters, low-cut filters, and automatic level control.

History & Development

Zoom Corporation developed the H4n in 2008 as the successor to their H4 series, which first combined film-capable XLR inputs with a compact form factor. In 2013, the H6 followed with a modular capsule system, and in 2020, the H8 with professional timecode features. The breakthrough came with the DSLR revolution starting in 2009, when filmmakers needed external audio solutions for mirrorless cameras. Today, Sound Devices' MixPre series and Tascam DR-70D compete for market share in the prosumer segment.

Practical Use in Film

In low-budget productions, the Zoom functions as a complete boom mic setup; for documentaries like "Free Solo" (2018), it served as a backup recorder in extreme climbing positions. Standard workflow: the camera records reference audio, the Zoom records the main track plus a wireless microphone on separate channels, and synchronization occurs in post-production via PluralEyes. Advantages include mobility and battery life; disadvantages appear with multi-microphone setups and in RF-congested environments without true input isolation.

Comparison & Alternatives

The Sound Devices 833 offers more professional preamplifiers and timecode integration for 3,000 Euros compared to 350 Euros for the H6. The Tascam DR-701D focuses on DSLR integration with HDMI transmission. Smartphone apps like Hindenburg Field Recorder do not achieve the audio quality of true preamplifiers. Zoom dominates the price range up to 500 Euros; above that, specialized broadcast manufacturers with modular mixers take over the field.
