Zero Print / DCP Zero

master medium digital cinema package dcp negative cost

First digital cinema package straight from color grading — not yet certified or through distribution workflow. Foundation for initial test screenings.

After weeks of color grading, the colorist hands you the first complete DCP from the grading suite – this is your Zero Print (or DCP Zero). It's not a certified product, doesn't have distribution metadata, and lacks KDM encryption for cinema operation. It's simply the raw digital cinema version of your film, directly from the DCP generator, to see how it actually looks on screen.

This is not the same as a DCP for exhibition. With the Zero Print, all the bureaucratic and technical hurdles are still absent – no compliance tests, no sound mix approval according to distribution standards, no check for color space conformity according to DCI specifications. You burn the DCP onto external drives, copy it to a server, and play it in a cinema auditorium, usually in collaboration with the projectionist. This is called a first test screening in the business. Here, the director, producer, and DOP see the work for the first time in a real cinema environment – not on the monitor in the grading suite, not on an iPad on the couch at home. This makes an enormous difference.

The Zero Print serves for quality control before final certification. You immediately see if the color correction still works as intended in large projection, if black levels are as expected, if flicker or encoding artifacts become visible. Often, small errors only appear there – a scene that seemed too dark in grading is perfect on the big screen, or vice versa. The sound also doesn't fit at first – the Zero Print often has a provisional soundtrack until the final mix is approved.

Following this test screening is the cinema-certified DCP – with all KDM data, digital signature, and a complete compliance check. Do not confuse the Zero Print with a preview DCP for festivals or test screenings; preview DCPs are also uncomplicated but may already be watermarked. The Zero Print is a pure working version – for your team, for the first true viewing in the cinema.
