French export promotion and international marketing agency — part of the CNC. Funds festivals, screenings, distribution support for French productions globally.

Unifrance acts as the operational arm of French film funding — not as a classic source of money, but as a distribution machinery for French films on the international market. Anyone who wants to bring a French production abroad as a producer or distributor will end up here. The organization does not finance the film itself, but the surrounding infrastructure: travel to festivals, material costs for screenings, marketing support at major markets, digital presentations for buyers and programmers.

You don't notice Unifrance directly on set — but at the latest when post-production is underway and sales begin. A typical scenario: your French distributor applies to Unifrance for support for Sundance or Cannes. Unifrance then partially pays for the translation costs for DCPs and subtitles, finances the producer's trip, and organizes screenings for international buyers. For smaller markets — Eastern Europe, Asia, Latin America — Unifrance also provides personnel or coordinates local agencies. This is the crucial point: without this infrastructure, many French films would never find their way out of Paris internationally.

Funding is limited and competitive — Unifrance prioritizes projects with recognized sales potential. An arthouse drama by a newcomer has less chance than an established name or a genre film with a festival history. The budget is tight, so they choose strategically. You submit your applications, wait for a committee meeting, and if approved, you receive a cash ceiling per market. This doesn't cover a complete campaign, but it's enough for a professional foundation.

Important: Unifrance is not the CNC itself — the CNC grants production funds, Unifrance handles exports after completion. Both work together, but with different roles. In international business, you will regularly encounter Unifrance — catalog numbers, database entries, official screenings. For German or English producers, the equivalent is like FilmFörderung or BFI — depending on which national support you need. Unifrance actively participates in sales fairs and coordinates French delegations at major festivals.
