R3D files store raw data with resolutions ranging from 4K (4096×2160) to 8K (8192×4320), depending on the camera model. Compression is handled by RED's REDCODE algorithm with factors from 2:1 to 22:1, where lower values indicate higher quality. A typical 4K R3D file at 8:1 compression generates approximately 1.5 GB of data per minute. The format uses 12-bit quantization during recording, extended to 16-bit for post-production. R3D supports metadata such as ISO, white balance, exposure, and lens information, which remain adjustable after capture.
History & Development
RED Digital Cinema introduced the R3D format in 2007 with the RED ONE camera, revolutionizing the digital filmmaking landscape. Company founder Jim Jannard developed the system as an alternative to expensive 35mm film workflows. The second generation, with improved compression, followed in 2010 with the EPIC series. The high data rate requires powerful workstations – for 6K footage at 24fps, at least 32 GB of RAM and dedicated GPUs are recommended.
