Quartz lamp

The halogen incandescent lamp with a quartz glass bulb is one of the most reliable workhorses on any set. The quartz bulb allows the filament to be operated significantly hotter than traditional incandescent bulbs — up to 3200 Kelvin — without the glass breaking. This makes the lamp compact, intense, and above all, dimmable without color shift. You can dim the fixture from 100% to 50% and still get the same warm, stable light. No color shift, no flickering issues.

On set, we work with quartz fixtures in various sizes: from tiny 300-watt hand-held spotlights to massive 5000 or 10000 Fresnel units in the studio. Quartz technology enables this scalability. The reason lies in chemistry — halogen gas in the lamp prevents tungsten from evaporating from the filament and blackening the glass. The lamp's life is dramatically extended, and the light output remains constant until the moment of failure. Practically, this means: fewer lamp changes during shooting, fewer surprises.

However, heat generation is considerable. Quartz fixtures require respect — burns, damaged materials on set, even fires are possible if one becomes careless. The lamps themselves too: touching them with bare fingers is taboo. Oil from the skin can seep into micro-cracks, cause local overheating, and destroy the lamp. Therefore, always use gloves or cloths. Heat radiation must also be considered — for close-ups or portraits, the intense, unfiltered quartz light can quickly become uncomfortable for actors.

Compared to modern LED solutions, quartz fixtures are losing relevance, but on many sets, they remain standard: they are robust, low-maintenance, the color quality is predictable and established. Many cinematographers and gaffers know the characteristics of these lamps from decades of experience — this is an underestimated advantage. For documentary shooting, for quick setups, and wherever reliability and known color rendering count, quartz fixtures remain the first choice.
