American manufacturer of digital high-speed cameras (since 1950s). Vision Research produces the world's fastest digital cameras – up to 25,000+ fps in 4K. Industry standard for slow-motion in film, advertising, and science.

What is Phantom?

Phantom is the camera brand of Vision Research, an American manufacturer based in New Jersey. Since the 1950s, Vision Research has been developing high-speed cameras for science and industry – and since the 2000s, for the film industry as well. Phantom cameras are the industry standard for extreme slow motion, achieving frame rates of over 25,000 fps at 4K resolution.

What Makes High-Speed Cameras Special?

Standard Camera (24 fps)

  • 1 second of recording = 1 second of playback
  • Fast movements blur
  • Motion blur

High-Speed Camera (1,000 fps)

  • 1 second of recording = 41.6 seconds of playback
  • Every detail visible
  • "Frozen" motion

The Math

Slow Motion Factor = Recording fps / Playback fps

1,000 fps / 24 fps = 41.6x Slow Motion
10,000 fps / 24 fps = 416x Slow Motion

Phantom vs. Film High-Speed

Film Era: ARRI 435 (150 fps max)

  • Mechanical limitations
  • Film stability at high speed
  • 150 fps = ~6x slow motion

Digital Era: Phantom

  • No mechanical limitations
  • Sensor-limited, not mechanics
  • 10,000+ fps = ~416x slow motion
