Full sensor recording allowing multiple aspect ratio deliveries from one shoot.

Definition

Open Matte records the full sensor image, with the final aspect ratio being determined in post-production. Framelines indicate the intended format, but additional information is available.

Practical Application

Flexibility for various outputs: Cinema in 2.35:1, Home Video in 1.78:1 with more image top/bottom. Reframing option for stabilization or re-cutting. IMAX often shows more image than standard cinema.

Technical Details

Advantage: Maximum flexibility. Disadvantage: The cinematographer must compose for multiple framings. Modern cameras display multiple frameline overlays simultaneously. No loss of information during recording.
