National Association of Television Arts & Sciences—Emmy Awards for television and streaming. Where episodic, limited series, and digital projects win recognition.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences administers one of the most influential award systems in the audiovisual industry—and those not present here are forfeiting enormous visibility. NATAS awards the Emmy Awards in several categories: the Primetime Emmys for series and specials, the Daytime Emmys for talk shows and soaps, the News & Documentary Emmys, and since the streaming era, the Children's & Family Emmys. For documentary filmmakers, series teams, and anyone shooting for television or the major streaming platforms, a nomination here is a door-opener—not just for prestige, but for budgets in the next production.

What many underestimate: NATAS is decentralized. There are 19 local chapters in the USA, and each awards its own Regional Emmy Awards. This means you can not only submit on a national level but also compete regionally—a lower hurdle, often better chances. A DP who shot a streaming series in LA can submit simultaneously to the Los Angeles Chapter and the national Emmys. The categories range from Cinematography to Editing, Sound Mixing, Production Design, Writing, and Directing. Unlike the Academy Awards (Oscars), the Emmy criteria are much broader—television film, limited series, drama, comedy, reality, documentary. There is no longer an artificial boundary between cinema and television.

Practically, this means you need a screener in the correct format, a reel, and juror notes. The submission deadlines are strict—usually spring for the awards ceremony in the fall. And the juries are real industry professionals, not amateurs. An Emmy nomination on a DoP's or editor's resume is not a nice-to-have; it's a seal of quality that studios and streamers take seriously. Some production designers have told me that a Regional Emmy landed them their next top series—not because of the golden statuette, but because it proved their work was recognized as outstanding by professionals. So, for those who don't make it into cinema or aren't recognized there, this is a system that honors television and streaming just as much—sometimes even more.
