Mechanical interface coupling camera body to lens. PL-Mount (52mm flange focal distance) standard for cinema production; EF-Mount offers extensive lens selection; E-Mount (18mm) enables compact camera design.

Technical Details

Common cine mounts differ significantly in their specifications: The PL mount (Positive Lock) operates with a flange focal distance of 52mm and an inner diameter of 54mm, while the Canon EF mount has a 44mm flange focal distance at a 54mm diameter. The Sony E-mount reduces the flange focal distance to 18mm with a 46.1mm diameter. Electronic contacts transmit aperture, focus, and stabilization data with up to 12 electrical connections. The bayonet typically operates via twist-lock mechanisms with three or four locking points, securely transmitting torques up to 15 Nm.

History & Development

In 1982, ARRI introduced the PL mount as an industry standard for 35mm film cameras, based on the Arriflex standard mount developed in 1958. Red established the Canon EF mount for digital cameras in 2007, followed by Sony in 2010 with the E-mount system. In 2018, the L-Mount Alliance (Leica, Panasonic, Sigma) presented the L-mount with a 51.6mm flange focal distance as a full-frame alternative. Canon responded in 2018 with the RF mount (20mm flange focal distance), and Nikon with the Z mount (16mm flange focal distance) – both optimized for mirrorless systems and shorter lens designs.

Practical Application in Film

Christopher Nolan consistently uses PL mount systems on IMAX cameras, for instance in "Dunkirk" (2017) with specially adapted Hasselblad lenses via PL adapters. "1917" (2019) combined ARRI Alexa Mini with Zeiss Master Prime PL lenses for the famous one-shot sequences. Netflix productions increasingly rely on Sony FX9 with E-mount, as adapter systems enable cost-effective lens variety. Swapping between different focal lengths takes about 30 seconds with PL systems, and up to 60 seconds with electronic mounts due to automatic calibration.

Comparison & Alternatives

The PL mount dominates high-end cinema productions due to its mechanical robustness and precision, while the EF mount offers flexibility through a wide selection of lenses. E-mount systems score with compact dimensions and adapter compatibility with legacy lenses. Micro Four Thirds (MFT) with a 19.25mm flange focal distance is suitable for documentary work. RF and Z mounts represent the latest generation with optimized electronic communication and higher data transfer rates for 8K recordings.
