Optical artifact from direct or indirect light in optics that creates characteristic reflections and halos.
Lens Flare
Lens flare is an optical phenomenon that occurs when strong light falls directly or indirectly into the lens, creating internal reflections between the glass surfaces. It manifests as circles of light, streaks, or a general loss of contrast.
Types of Lens Flare
- Ghosting: Hexagonal or circular light reflections (shape of the aperture)
- Veiling: General loss of contrast due to stray light
- Anamorphic Flare: Horizontal streaks with anamorphic lenses
- Streak Flare: Radial lines with special optics
Control
Avoidance:
- Matte box with flags
- French flag
- Lens hood
- Modern multi-coating
Enhancement:
- Vintage lenses with simple coatings
- Uncoated optics
- Special flare filters
