Types of Lens Flare

  • Ghosting: Hexagonal or circular light reflections (shape of the aperture)
  • Veiling: General loss of contrast due to stray light
  • Anamorphic Flare: Horizontal streaks with anamorphic lenses
  • Streak Flare: Radial lines with special optics

Control

Avoidance:

  • French flag
  • Lens hood
  • Modern multi-coating

Enhancement:

  • Vintage lenses with simple coatings
  • Uncoated optics
  • Special flare filters
