Astera AX3 LightDrop: Compact RGBW LED fixture with 360° output, 1.750K–20.000K, CRI 96+, battery-powered with Bluetooth control for location cinematography.

Technical Details

The AX3 operates with an RGBW LED array and achieves a color temperature of 1,750K to 20,000K with a CRI of 96+. Control is via the AsteraApp via Bluetooth or wired via DMX512. With a weight of 650 grams and a maximum power consumption of 15 watts, the fixture is suitable for mobile applications. The housing is made of impact-resistant polycarbonate, and the integrated lithium-ion battery (7.4V/5,200mAh) fully charges via USB-C in 4.5 hours. Additional mounting options are provided by magnetic mounts and a standardized 1/4" thread.

History & Development

Astera LED Technology launched the AX3 LightDrop in 2019 as a further development of the successful AX1 series. The Munich-based company, founded in 2008 by Sebastian Bückle, initially specialized in architectural lighting before expanding into the film sector in 2015 with the Titan Tube. The AX3 was born out of the need to create an even more compact and versatile alternative to conventional practical lights. In 2021, the series was expanded with the AX5 TriplePAR as a more powerful variant.

Practical Use in Film

In "The Batman" (2022), DoP Greig Fraser used AX3 fixtures as hidden light sources in vehicles to set dynamic color accents during chase scenes. The compact design allows them to be concealed on set without complex cabling – particularly advantageous for handheld shots or in confined spaces. Gaffers frequently use the AX3 as an eye light for close-ups or to accentuate props. The low power consumption and long battery life make them ideal for outdoor shoots without a power connection. Disadvantages become apparent in the limited light output for large area illumination and the need for regular battery changes on multi-day productions.

Comparison & Alternatives

The AX3 directly competes with the ARRI SkyPanel S30-C in the compact LED fixture segment, but offers different application areas due to its battery operation and mobility. Compared to the Quasar Science Q-LED, the AX3 provides more uniform 360° illumination, while the Q-LED excels with higher light output for directional throw. For larger sets or general illumination, the AX5 TriplePAR or AX7 SpotLite from the same series are used. For budget productions, Godox LC30 or Nanlite PavoTube serve as more affordable alternatives, but do not achieve the color accuracy and build quality of Astera products.
