Compact battery-powered LED light by Astera with 25° beam angle, continuously variable color temperature 1750–20,000K, and 4–20h runtime; ideal for practicals and mobile productions.

Technical Details

The AX5 operates with an integrated 7.4V Lithium-ion battery (25Wh), providing an operating time of 4-20 hours, depending on brightness and color settings. The anodized aluminum housing is IP65 certified and can withstand drops of up to 1.5 meters. The color temperature can be continuously adjusted between 1750K and 20,000K, while the RGB mixing allows for over 16.7 million colors. The beam angle is 25° and can be extended up to 120° with diffusers. Remote control is via the proprietary AsteraApp via Bluetooth or by DMX signal through a separate AsteraBox system.

History & Development

Astera LED Technology introduced the AX5 in 2018 as a compact alternative to larger battery-powered luminaires. The Munich-based company originally developed the device for event and architectural lighting but quickly recognized its potential for film productions. In 2019, it was launched in the US, and by 2020, the AX5 had established itself through increased use in high-end productions. The current firmware version 1.7.3 from 2023 expanded the effect library with cinema-specific programs such as candlelight simulation and TV flicker.

Practical Use in Film

The AX5 is particularly suitable for practical lights (practicals) that are visible in the frame, as well as for hard-to-reach positions without a power supply. In "The Queen's Gambit" (2020), AX5 lights were positioned as hidden uplights behind chessboards to create dramatic shadows. For automotive shots, the lights can be magnetically attached to the car body to simulate passing streetlights. The Silent Mode eliminates fan noise during sound recording, while the pixel mapping function enables complex light animations. Limitations include the restricted light output for large rooms and battery life for long takes.

Comparison & Alternatives

The AX5 directly competes with the Arri SkyPanel S30-C but offers significantly more mobility at a lower light output. Compared to the Aputure MC, the AX5 has three times the luminous flux but costs accordingly more. As a successor, Astera developed the AX10 in 2022 with double the light output and longer battery life. For pure RGB effects without high light requirements, more affordable alternatives like the Godox TL30 suffice, while for maximum light output, wired systems like the Arri Orbiter remain indispensable.
