Astera AX2: Battery-powered LED tube with 120 RGBW LEDs, 20-hour runtime, wireless DMX control, and IP65 rating for mobile accent and effects lighting.

Technical Details

The AX2 operates with 120 individual LEDs (RGBW chips) and achieves a CRI value of 97+ as well as a TLCI value of 98+. The operating time is up to 20 hours at 10% power or 2.5 hours at full load. The IP65-certified spotlight features wireless DMX control (CRMX) and can be controlled via the AsteraApp using Bluetooth. The beam angle is 120°, but can be modified with optional diffusers and honeycombs. The unit charges via a magnetic charging cable and has an integrated battery indicator.

History & Development

Astera introduced the AX series in 2018 in response to the growing demand for flexible, battery-powered LED solutions. The AX2 was launched in 2020 as the successor to the AX1, offering double the light output with only a slight increase in weight. The development was carried out in collaboration with cinematographers and gaffers who needed compact solutions for tight shooting situations and mobile productions.

Practical Use in Film

The AX2 primarily serves as accent and effect lighting, for example, to simulate neon tubes, computer screens, or colored ambient lights. In Christopher Nolan's "Tenet" (2020), AX2 tubes were used to illuminate the futuristic laboratory sequences. The units can be discreetly integrated into sets as they operate without visible cables and their slim design allows them to be positioned even in confined spaces. The wireless DMX connection enables precise color changes and dimming effects during shooting.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to the smaller AX1 (100W), the AX2 offers double the light output with a 40% longer form factor. Alternatives include the Quasar Science Q-LED (similar light output, but wired) or the Arri SkyPanel S30-C (higher output, but significantly heavier). The larger AX3 (300W, 1.68m) is suitable for applications requiring more light output. For pure daylight applications without color changes, conventional Kino Flo tubes often offer a better price-performance ratio.
