You're editing a dance scene and quickly realize: the actor has to move precisely to the music, not the other way around. This is acoustic driving — the editing and movement logic follows the pre-recorded sound, not the live set. On set, this happens like this: the sound plays over monitoring, and the actor and camera synchronize afterwards. In the edit, you orient your edit marks, transitions, and even camera movements to the audio cues — to the beginnings of words or music, not to the "natural" image flow.
In practice, this works particularly well in the musical genre. The song is finished, and the singer/dancer has to enter precisely on the hook, frame-accurate. Also with voice recordings that you integrate later via sync, the dialogue dictates the editing decision — not the camera movement. This creates a certain "technical" look because movement and sound don't develop organically but are synchronized. Sometimes you can tell: the edit seems too precise, too synchronized, almost robotic — that's the signature of acoustic driving.
For this, you need a precise understanding of timing. On set: playback speakers, wireless in-ear monitors for performers, click track for camera and editing assistants. In the edit: the sound is ready, you cut the picture to it — not the other way around. It's also important that playback quality is often modest because it only needs to serve as monitoring. The final audio mix comes later; however, your editing decisions are already based on this "rough" take sound.
The difference to classic sound recording: there, you synchronize sound after the picture — the speaker follows lip-sync, the music follows the edit. With acoustic driving, it's inverted: the picture follows the sound. This works for dance choreographies, lip-sync scenes, and sometimes for dialogue replays where a statement needs to be timed precisely. It's less "natural," but precision-oriented.
