6x6 Frame: A 1.83 × 1.83 m square metal frame used for light modification, typically fitted with diffusion or reflector materials.
Definition
The 6x6 Frame is a standardized lighting accessory in professional film and television production. It is a rectangular metal frame measuring 6 x 6 feet (approximately 1.83 x 1.83 meters), which serves as a support for various light modification materials. The frame is typically covered with diffusion fabrics (Diffusion Silk), reflector materials, negative fill (Black Solid), or other textile light shapers.
This construction belongs to the family of Butterfly frames and is mainly used in exterior lighting as well as in large studio productions. The robust aluminum frame allows large areas to be evenly shaded or diffused without the need to position multiple smaller frames.
Practical Application
The 6x6 frame is often stretched over actors or subject areas to diffuse harsh sunlight or to shade unwanted light sources. Especially in exterior shots with multiple people, the large surface area provides sufficient protection from direct sunlight. It is mounted using C-stands with appropriate grip arms or special frame holders.
Technical Details
The frame consists of screwed or plug-in aluminum tubes and weighs between 8-12 kg depending on the version. Modern versions are often collapsible for transport. The covering is attached via grommets or Velcro fasteners on the frame edge.
