Technical Specifications
The 5K Fresnel achieves 40,000-50,000 lux at 5 meters in spot mode. The Fresnel lens has a diameter of 300mm and is mechanically reinforced for higher heat tolerance. Color temperature: Tungsten 3200K (standard) or rarely HMI 5600K.
The focusing mechanism is equipped with a gear drive and often motor-assisted on professional sets. The unit requires robust mounting systems – a standard tripod is insufficient. Dimensions: approx. 480mm x 360mm, weight 13-15 kg (without stand). Power consumption:
- Tungsten 5K: 5000W direct
- HMI 5K: approx. 6000W with ballast
Heat generation is extreme – over 3500 watts of radiant heat. The bulb reaches surface temperatures over 200°C.
History & Development
The 5K Fresnel originated in the 1940s for large-scale studio lighting in Hollywood. The variant became standard, especially in the 1950s-60s, for widescreen and Technicolor productions with enormous lighting requirements.
The introduction of HMI technology reduced power consumption for equivalent 5K HMIs from 6000W to 5000W, but necessitated investment in expensive ballasts. Modern 5K models feature safety valves and automatic shutdown in case of overheating.
Practical Use in Film
The 5K Fresnel was the standard light for major Hollywood productions until around 2000. In Steven Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan" (1998), the massive beach invasion was lit with multiple 5K Fresnels on rigging – the light intensity cut through smoke and fog, creating cinematic drama.
In modern blockbusters, the 5K is rarely used, as LED panels and HMI arrays have taken over the role. Exceptions include exterior shoots where pinpoint light intensity is required against sunlight, or horror/drama productions that favor classic, highly dramatic lighting.
Variants & Alternatives
The 5K HMI saves power (5000W instead of 5000W) but is costly to purchase and maintain. The 10K Fresnel offers double the light intensity for more extreme scenes but requires heavy-duty rigging.
LED alternatives such as ARRI SkyPanel X60 or Titan Tube 4x4 achieve similar area lighting with 75% less power consumption but cannot replace the focused punch of a true 5K Fresnel. HMI arrays (multiple smaller HMI fixtures) offer flexibility and cost savings.
The 5K Fresnel remains indispensable for exterior backlight scenes and dramatic top lighting of large interiors.
